
The whole instrument is sanded down through 150 grit to 240 and 320, getting a finer and finer surface, eliminating the scratches from the previous grit.
At this point I 'raise the grain' by applying water to the surface then sanding back at 320 again. This is important because i'll be using water based dye for the colour work and a water based lacquer for the final finish. Broken fibres standing proud could ruin all my good work :)
Ive mixed up and tested a colour I've named 'Avalon Swamp Murk' that Steve is happy with and i'm going to apply it by hand to try and achieve a more organic stain to the edges, not really a sunburst. I don't want to lose the character of the cherry tone wood.
